Prendiamoci cura della Terra

22 April – Earth Day

Established by the United Nations in 1970, Earth Day aims to raise public awareness of environmental protection. They chose the date of April 22nd of each year, i.e. one month and one day after the spring equinox, to underline the need to save the Planet’s natural resources and to give an impetus to the commitment to protecting the environment and the fight against climate change.

Born from the university movements of the late sixties and seventies, to underline the need to conserve the Earth’s natural resources, Earth Day has now become an educational and informative event. Environmentalists and ecologist groups use it as an opportunity to take stock of the planet’s problems: the pollution of air, water and soil, the destruction of ecosystems, the thousands of plants and animal species that disappear, and the exhaustion of non-renewable resources.
For those wishing to delve deeper into the history and meaning of the birth of this day we recommend:

We only want to add that the meaning of this day is not to celebrate, but to reflect and make people reflect on our relationship with Mother Earth, on what we receive, and on how, with our behavior, we reciprocate her gifts. Martin Jennings, a seventeen-year-old from Florida who cleaned up his city’s waterways as a volunteer, put up posters everywhere with the slogan that would later become famous: “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” Being on the side of the solution means feeling part of the Planet and understanding that all the “wrongs” done to the Earth will return to us as problems.

To celebrate World Earth Day, EARTH GARDENERS has decided to welcome the invitation of the Messaggerie Sarde bookshop in Sassari for a day of reading and nature. We believe that support for scientific dissemination is fundamental at a time when social channels too often, due to ignorance or particular interests, spread falsehoods with guilty carelessness.

On 22 April Messaggerie Sarde will open its doors to present to the public a vast choice of books for children and adults, that will deal with various topics relating to different and complex environmental issues, from loss of biodiversity to waste recycling; from renewable energy to new sustainable lifestyles.
EARTH GARDENERS will be on the first floor, together with the booksellers, to help you choose the books that best suit your needs and to give you gadgets that relate to our battle for the protection of the Monk Seal.
In the room on the second floor, we will give you some “surprises” that will make us spend a quarter of an hour in a pleasant and “instructive” way. Now, we won’t reveal more to pique your curiosity and reward those who come to spend a pleasant afternoon with us!
